Findings from The 2006 Home Lifestyle Report include:
  • When it comes to entertaining guests, outdoor living spaces are more popular than the kitchen. And while homeowners are most likely to turn to the living room when guests arrive, their next choice is a gathering in the great outdoors.
  • More than sixty percent of respondents want the look and feel of their outdoor living area to reflect the look and feel of their home. New nesters (those who have lived in their home for 0-5 years) and Lifers (those who have spent 16+ years in their home) are most likely to share this sentiment.
  • Home décor tied with clothing, shoes and accessories as respondents’ top choice for expressing their personal style.
  • 44% of homeowners update their outdoor rooms seasonally, just like their wardrobes.
  • Two thirds of experienced Homeowners (those who own have owned more than one residence) believe the design of their outdoor space is an extension of their personality.
  • Homeowners across the country favor an array of design elements: candles and porch swings in the Midwest, rocking chairs and built-in BBQ/kitchens in the South and hammocks in the East.
  • Homeowners with children are most likely to make a purchase in the near future to customize their outdoor living spaces.
